Trail Running Details: Easy, wide, well groomed, dry trail up 300ft, along the Lillian Ridge then down 1500ft. to a junction with Grand Lake and Badger Valley Trail at 3.8 miles. Continue along easy, rolling, uphill trail to Moose Lake for ½ mile gaining 125 ft. then more steeply on to Grand Pass gaining another 1375 ft at 6.3 miles and 6450 ft elevation. There is a small peak just above the pass, Pass Peak, with a steep trail leading to it’s summit. The view from the top is a 360 degree panorama and worth the effort. Overall the scenery is occasionally in trees but mostly open Alpine terrain, rocky and permanent snow fields on the higher Northern slopes. I did see a sizeable Black Bear cross Lillian Ridge Trail infront of me, Deer, Marmot, Grey Jay, Grouse and lots of ground squirrels. August is the best time to see the wonderful display of flowers as bushes had already taken on the red leaf of Autumn.

Running Gear: Breathable long sleeved tee-shirt, shorts, DryMax socks, Montrail Mountain Masochist trail running shoes, Camelbak Rim Runner with 2 quarts water,  Peanut butter cheese and marmalade sandwich , Cliff Bar, Gu energy gel, windproof jacket and over trousers, thin fleece, thick fleece, fingerless woolen gloves, beanie hat.

Trailhead: From Port Angeles and the Olympic National Park entry gate drive 17 miles up to Hurricane Ridge and turn sharply off onto Obstruction Point dirt track road – not for the faint hearted!! Follow the weaving, undulating, washboard dirt track for 8 miles then you’ll arrive at the Grand Ridge / Grand Lake trailhead at Obstruction Point 6150 ft. Great views of Mt. Olympus.
