South Indian Island Trails – Jefferson County WA
These 3 wonderful trails have been my local “go to” running grounds for many years. The trails have been greatly improved over time and officially named Portage Trail, Lagoon Trail and Isthmus Trail. They parallel shorelines of Portage Canal and Oak Bay, generally facing South, and receive the warmth of sunshine. The area is also a bird spotters paradise around the lagoon which is easily reached by trail and beach. Seals and other marine life frolic in the strong tides of Portage Canal. The area is also a fly fishers and clam diggers haven.
Park opposite Indian Island Naval Magazine entrance on SR-116 (or at the East end of Isthmus trail).
Portage trail is connected to Lagoon trail by a short distance on a beach access hard packed road.
Lagoon trail ends at SR-116 and reconnects to Isthmus trail a few hundred yards East – stay on the edge of the road and face oncoming traffic for safety.
At the East end of Isthmus trail there is access to beach flat lands where an extra 1/2 mile of jogging can be enjoyed before hitting the no trespassing signs of Marrowstone Island residents.
You can also jog the entire length of beach between one end and the other subject to tide conditions.
