Sailing and Jogging the San Juan Islands – Orcas Island

August 2012 – A sailing holiday to the San Juan Islands of Washington State in “Simplicity”, my traditional gaff rigged double ender wooden sloop. The weather was perfect for 9 straight days of sun, warmth and bright blue skies. Sailing was mostly slow in light to zero winds except for a couple of days. My wife and I motor/sailed “Simplicity” to many of the islands, taking advantage of favorable tides, and finding good anchorages before rowing our dinghy ashore. Most of the islands and coves we visited had access to hiking trails, some in good condition from plenty of use and some severely overgrown.

Orcas Island –

Rosario or Eastsound. Immediately East of Rosario is Moran State Park and a short stiff hike uphill will get you there. From Eastsound a local bus service will get you there.  Moran State Park is the home of Rainshadow Running’s 25K and 50K event and has endless trail systems up and around Mt. Constitution (2408ft). Views from the high trails are unparalleled.

Orcas Island – West Sound. A brisk walk or jog up the road for a couple of miles will get you to Turtleback mountain (1519ft) trails where you’ll find many more excellent, wide trails with fantastic views further West over President Channel to Waldron Island and South to Massacre Bay.
