Sailing and Jogging the San Juan Islands – Lopez Island

August 2012 – A sailing holiday to the San Juan Islands of Washington State in “Simplicity”, my traditional gaff rigged double ender wooden sloop. The weather was perfect for 9 straight days of sun, warmth and bright blue skies. Sailing was mostly slow in light to zero winds except for a couple of days. My wife and I motor/sailed “Simplicity” to many of the islands, taking advantage of favorable tides, and finding good anchorages before rowing our dinghy ashore. Most of the islands and coves we visited had access to hiking trails, some in good condition from plenty of use and some severely overgrown.

Lopez Island – Fisherman Bay. Easy access to quiet roads for running or renting bicycles to tour the island. Try a locally made Lopez Island ice cream from the town of Lopez. They’re super creamy. Yum.

Lopez Island – Mackaye Harbor. Easy access to the beach then head South for Agate Beach County Park on out to Iceberg Point and views of the Straights of Juan De Fuca and the Olympic mountains across the waters.

Lopez Island – Watmaugh Bay. Access to trails directly from the beach up to Chadwick Hill (464ft) and surrounding area.

Lopez Island – Spencer Spit North or South anchorages. Beach access into Spencer Spit State Park trails.
