Quilcene, WA – 5K, 10K and Half Marathon

The sleepy logging town of Quilcene Washington is putting itself on the map these days by inviting people to visit their special hamlet for events. One such event is the now regular yearly 5K, 10K and Half Marathon in September.

Quilcene running event Here

The sanctioned HM is a very tough hilly course on back roads and forest service roads. There were enough marshals and water stations, but there was no chalk markings or ribbons to know which direction to take at the many junctions and Y’s off the main forest service road.

Half Marathon started at 9am, 10K at 10am, 5K at 10.05am and there was a kids race in the event field. Weather was perfect, cool and sunny. The runs shared some of the same route over the last 2 or 3 miles of the HM. This had a bonus of meeting up with other runners on the shorter routes and urging increased effort to finish in a good time.

I pushed myself to aim to finish within 2 hours and I really wanted to finish in 1 hr 57 mins = 9.0 mins/mile average pace. I had an excellent run and completed the course in 1 hr 52 min 37.27 sec = 8 min 36 sec/mile average pace which placed me as first in the 60-64 age group.

My Runners Number & Bling

The course winner was a Carolina University student who finished in 1 hr 20 mins. If the course had been flat he would have been 10 minutes faster.

Refreshments of beer and fried oysters were supplied in the event field while awaiting prize giving. Highway 101 Brewery at Twana Road House supplied two excellent brews that helped to slake a thirst.
