Running Shoes: Barefoot Technology – Five Fingered Shoes

These are great for catching daisies between the toes and running on grassy or compacted trails without angulated stones and rocks. The more modern of these styles now have thicker soles than those of a few years ago and offer increased resilience. The individual toe pockets are great for splaying our toes wide open and beneficial in reducing or straightening pre-hammer toes. But it has been known to catch one toe and bend it under the foot whilst pushing off – Result: a broken toe. Ouch!! Once again, this type of shoe offers no support whatsoever and won’t protect you if you kick something only moderately hard. The theory is that by wearing this type of shoe the intrinsic muscles of the feet are ‘woken up’ to strengthen the feet and lower leg muscles; range of motion of ankles, feet and toes are improved; balance and agility are neurally stimulated and heel lift is eliminated for improved alignment and posture.
